Dragon Staff Shaft Compatibility: 22 mm, 7/8-Inch and Smaller Shafts

Inspirate LED dragon staff heads attach to the outside of the shaft with tool-free quick-release adapters. You can use your existing shaft or buy one locally, provided its diameter and ends meet the requirements below.

Will your shaft fit?

• Standard fit: a straight, round mounting surface with an actual outside diameter of 21.5–22.3 mm. This includes 22 mm and true 7/8-inch shafts (22.225 mm).
• Mounting length: at least 32 mm at each end; 35 mm recommended. No grip or tape in the mounting area; caps and hardware must not obstruct insertion.
• Smaller than 21.5 mm: a custom TPU reducer may be possible after an individual check. Larger than 22.3 mm: the standard adapter will not fit, and a reducer cannot help.

External sleeves are allowed if they are firmly secured to the shaft, meet the diameter and mounting-length requirements above, and do not obstruct insertion. Measure the outside of the sleeve, not the tube beneath it. Without a sleeve, measure the tube itself. The inside diameter does not determine the fit.

How to measure your shaft

Remove the original heads and hubs, plus any end fittings that obstruct installation. Leave a suitable, securely fitted sleeve in place. Check both mounting sections for damage, ovality and protrusions. Use a ruler or tape measure to check the available straight length.

With calipers

Measure the outside diameter in several directions and at more than one point along each mounting section. Do not measure over grip, tape or silicone. Check both ends rather than assuming they are identical.

Without calipers: paper strip and ruler

1. Wrap a thin strip of paper snugly around the mounting surface once. Keep it square to the shaft, not at an angle, and mark where its starting edge meets the strip.
2. Lay the strip flat and measure from the starting edge to the mark with a ruler or tape measure. This is the circumference.
3. Approximate diameter = circumference ÷ 3.14. For example, 69 mm ÷ 3.14 ≈ 22 mm.

For a rough check, you can also place a ruler or tape measure across the exposed end and measure from outside edge to outside edge through the centre—not across the hole.

These are estimates, not confirmation of a fit. Repeat at both ends. Near 21.5 or 22.3 mm, confirm with calipers; a circumference measurement cannot rule out ovality. You can send approximate measurements and photos for an initial assessment, but a custom TPU reducer needs an accurate final diameter.

Shaft models and compatibility

This list is based on published dimensions, not physical testing of every model or revision. All entries still require the clear ends described above. Compatibility follows the exact shaft model—not the retailer or brand name alone.

Carbon-fibre shafts: inspect the ends for cracks, crushed fibres or delamination. If the shaft manufacturer requires internal reinforcement, use the specified insert fitted flush. External sleeves are allowed when they meet the requirements above. Do not overtighten the clamp.

Collapsible shafts: the same diameter and clear-end requirements apply to the two outer sections. No connector button may sit in the mounting area. Lock all sections fully and check that the assembled shaft is straight, without excessive play at the joints.

Fitting the heads and adjusting the clamp

The quick-release clamp has a cam lever and an adjustment nut. The nut sets the initial gap and the clamping force when the lever closes. Adjust it with the lever open. This fine adjustment does not replace a TPU reducer or extend the stated diameter range.

1. Assemble and lock the shaft. Inspect both mounting sections and adapters for damage or debris.
2. Open the levers and loosen the nuts as needed to let the adapters slide on without forcing them. Fit the correct TPU reducers if required, insert each shaft end fully to the 32 mm mounting depth, and align the heads.
3. With the lever open, adjust the nut in small increments, then close the lever completely. If the head is loose, reopen the lever and tighten the nut slightly. If the lever will not close without excessive force, reopen it and loosen the nut slightly.
4. Pull and twist each head by hand. Neither the head nor any external sleeve should move on the shaft.
5. Start with slow rotations in a clear practice area. Recheck both clamps after the first session and after hard drops.

Do not use the staff if a head or sleeve moves, a lever cannot close normally, or the shaft is damaged.
